Michael Reid, CFA

President | Chief Executive Officer

Biography

Michael R. Reid, CFA, is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Exchange Capital Management, Inc., a fee-only registered investment adviser based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. With more than three decades of experience in financial services, Michael has been at the helm of Exchange Capital Management since founding the firm in 1989, shaping its strategic direction and cultivating a client-first, planning-centered advisory model.

A proud graduate of the University of Michigan (B.G.S., 1982), Michael began his career at Kidder, Peabody & Co. before establishing Exchange Capital Management. In addition to serving as CEO, he holds the role of Chief Compliance Officer, ensuring the firm maintains rigorous adherence to SEC regulatory standards. He earned the Chartered Financial Analyst® designation in 1993, underscoring a deep expertise in investment analysis and portfolio construction. A frequent voice in the financial planning community, Michael is known for his thoughtful perspectives on fiduciary responsibility, advanced wealth planning, and advisor ethics.

Michael’s leadership extends well beyond the private sector. Twice elected to the Ann Arbor City Council, he has been a dedicated public servant who contributed extensively to the City of Ann Arbor’s economic development initiatives. In addition to holding public office, he served as a Mayoral appointee to the City’s Local Development Finance Authority (LDFA), an entity charged with financing technology-based business growth and job creation within the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti SmartZone™. During his tenure on the LDFA board—including service as its Chair—Michael played a key role in shaping funding strategies for early-stage technology companies and ensuring accountability and transparency in the use of public-private resources.

Michael is also deeply committed to community service. He served with distinction on the Board of Directors for the Ann Arbor YMCA, and as Board Chair for Catholic Social Services of Washtenaw County, contributing to the organization's mission of providing compassionate care and support to individuals and families in need. Additionally, Michael played a pivotal role in the Ann Arbor Amateur Hockey Association, first as a volunteer head coach and then stepping in as Vice President of the Board to help rescue the organization from insolvency. His efforts were instrumental in restoring financial stability and trust within the community.

Outside of his professional and civic commitments, Michael finds balance through outdoor adventure and family. He remains an avid amateur hockey player and is an experienced wilderness backpacker with hundreds of trail miles logged on the Appalachian, Pacific Crest, John Muir, and North Country trails, as well as scores of national, state, and provincial parks throughout the United States, Canada, and Argentina. A passionate fresh and salt-water fly fisherman, Michael’s rod, reel, fly box, and valid fishing license are either firmly secured to his backpack or permanently stashed in the trunk of his car awaiting the next opportune stretch of promising water. He and his wife, Janet, reside just off the banks of the Huron River in Ann Arbor and are the proud parents of four adult children and two incredibly spoiled black Labrador retrievers.
